The Peacemakers eBook Richard Herman Reviews
If had that option, I would have rated at 4.5 stars (MAYBE a bit heavy-handed on the battle action) instead of full 5, but can give it 5 with clear conscience, Lol! I've always enjoyed Mr Herman's books (read many of them) & this is no exception! Good balance of military politics (the "BS" behind many military/political decisions), action, romantic interests, & camaraderie within the Air Force & its partners. As a USAF veteran, I can certainly appreciate the author's attention to detail, especially pertaining to the aircraft with which he is intimately familiar. A good, realistic, action read that takes you behind the scenes, I recommend it!
Good story, great characters, plenty of action. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Very believable with people that can think and care for victims and do something about it. Herman takes the old workhorse of the air force, the Herc (I've spent some time in one) and paints a great story around the horror that is so common in Africa and largely ignored by the world. I will definitely pick up more of Richard Herman's novels.
The cover picture grabbed my attention and the writing kept it! Having spent much of 30 years first maintaining and then as a flight engineer on C130s in both the Air Force and civilian cargo operations I have a natural affinity for the Herk. In my civilian endeavors I even flew relief missions in Africa, including The Sudan and Somalia back in the 90's. I found a great deal of truth in this novel and loved how it kept me turning the pages. The action was great and the characters well thought out, both the good and the bad guys.
Not too sure about the command structure outlined here, and the notion that a rogue government would demand, and some senior military staff would agree to, the surrender of USAF aircraft is a bit of a stretch, since an Air Force plane is considered sovereign territory no matter where in the world it is. Overall this was a great read, reminiscent of Clive Custler or Tom Clancy and I will most likely read more offerings from Richard Herman.
The Peacemakers is an excellent fiction work that gives the reader some insight in to the complexity of the Air Force line and staff command in the ranks; decision making by commanders and the politics that goes on among senior officers to complete their missions or move their careers along. This is set against the back drop of famine and radical Islam in Africa and the failed United Nations attempts at peace keeping. There is a pit of Hollywood in the novel with a movie star character (Tara) is who is out to save refugees from hunger and captivity. Overall, the book is an action filled novel about an "old warrior" Air Force Colonel Allston (who is given an impossible mission). The novel has several main characters that add other dimensions to the book. There is the gallant French Foreign Legion Vermullen, a missionary doctor, female subordinate officers and a Brigadier General Richards who is out to destroy the Allston's career. The tools that Allston uses to achieve his mission depend on his ingenuity, lessons learned as a fighter pilot in Vietnam, his mental and physical skills and the use of the Air Forces' C-131 planes. The author was a career Air Force officer which makes the novel more realistic.
I have read countless books. I don't know how I missed this author. For me, it was like discovering lost treasure.
I first read Warbirds, and then it's sequel..I then ordered all of his books that were sold by .
This is my third Herman book, and it continues with the Air Force at its heart. This time mostly C 130's, or trash haulers . But this book
Is focused in Africa, telling about the Sudan/South Sudan conflict, and all the action you can stand. It includes a lot of the politics of Africa,
Along with the UN. Another central theme is military politics and the conflict between warriors and ticket punchers.
It has a great hero. A real warrior, who seemingly can fly under any condition. A big plus is the role of the French Foreign Legion
And its role as part of the UN mission. A little romance thrown in to boot.
A thriller that could not be written without a great deal of Air Force expertise, on the battle front as well as in the halls of the U.S.
Congress.
I am now hoarding my list of Herman books so as to not read them all in a frenzy. I hope he lives forever and writes a hundred books.
Congress.
